The foundation stone of the main college building was laid by the Honorable Chief Minister on July 7, 2011, and the building was officially inaugurated by the Honorable Minister for Education on October 19, 2014.

Affiliation

Government Degree College Sumbal is a public sector institution operating under the administrative control of the Department of Higher Education, Government of J&K (UT). Academically, the college is affiliated with the University of Kashmir, Srinagar. Initially, the University of Kashmir granted temporary affiliation in 2010, enabling the formal commencement of classes. Permanent affiliation was later extended on January 23, 2018. The college received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2f of the UGC Act 1956 on March 2, 2012, and was granted 12B status in 2019. That same year, the college achieved its first cycle of accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Funding for the college is provided by the State Government and the central government through the PM-USHA. Classwork began in 2012 under the leadership of the college's first principal, Prof. Anjli Razdan.

Infrastructure

As a relatively new institution, GDC Sumbal is still in the process of developing its infrastructure. Despite this, significant progress has been made, and the college currently accommodates over 2,000 students. The main building, a fully furnished three-story structure, features 12 lecture halls, four large event halls and laboratories for all science subjects with vast scope for upgradation. Additionally, there are numerous rooms for staff and teaching departments. The campus includes six prefabricated huts that house two gymnasiums and classrooms. A dispensary is also available on-site to provide emergency medical attention and first aid to students. A large building housing an auditorium and a sizable library is complete and ready for hand-over. The college has also completed a spacious indoor stadium that, once fully furnished, will host indoor tournaments for various sports including tennis, basketball, pool, carrom and badminton. The campus features two large sports grounds as well.

GDC Sumbal has 26 academic departments offering Major Subjects (under NEP) in science, arts, and commerce disciplines.
