College Profile

Established on June 1, 1944, by Maharani Tara Devi under the reign of Maharaja Hari Singh, GCW Parade Ground is the first women's college in Jammu Province. Initially known as Maharani Mahila College, it was taken over by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir in 1953 and renamed accordingly. Over the decades, the college has grown into a leading institution dedicated to empowering women through quality education.

GCW offers a broad spectrum of courses across Arts, Sciences, Commerce, Music, Computer Applications, and skill-based programs, serving the academic aspirations of over 5,000 students. Being the best academic institution for women in Jammu & Kashmir state , college was granted Autonomy in 2014 ,CPE (College with Potential for Excellence) status by UGC in  2016  and was re-accredited as ‘B+’ Grade by NAAC in 2023.  Recognized in the NIRF 2024 rankings (151-200 band), the college reflects excellence in academics, infrastructure, and student support.

In tune with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, GCW introduced the innovative Four-Year Undergraduate Program: Design Your Degree (DYD) from the academic session 2023-24. This program allows students to personalize their academic paths by combining disciplines as per their interests and career goals.
The Mass Communication and Media Production (MCMP) Department equips students with advanced skills in journalism, digital media, and storytelling. Postgraduate departments in English, Music, and Zoology promote critical thinking, creativity, and scientific research.

GCW boasts a well-equipped campus with a central library, auditorium, botanical garden, open-air gym, hostel accommodations, health center, and specialized labs and cells for entrepreneurship, innovation, legal aid, and language learning. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities through NCC, NSS, arts & crafts centers, cultural events, and various clubs, ensuring holistic development.

Strategically located opposite the historic Parade Ground in Old Jammu City, GCW offers students the advantage of being in a culturally rich area while providing access to modern facilities and vibrant campus life.
