Background
Qazigund, popularly known as the “Gateway to Kashmir,” is an important town in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Situated at 33.59°N latitude and 75.16°E longitude, the town lies at an average elevation of 1670 metres (5478 feet) above mean sea level. Owing to its strategic location on National Highway–44 and the Northern Railway network, Qazigund serves as a vital link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country. One of the region’s most remarkable infrastructural achievements is the Banihal–Qazigund Railway Tunnel, an 11-kilometre-long tunnel beneath the Pir Panjal range. Recognized as the longest railway tunnel in India and among the longest in Asia, it has significantly improved transportation and reduced travel time between Banihal and Qazigund. The nearby village of Panzath, renowned for its nearly 500 natural springs, further enhances the ecological, cultural, and environmental significance of the area.
About the College
Government Degree College Qazigund was established in 2019 with the objective of providing accessible and quality higher education to students of the region. The college initially functioned from the erstwhile Gateway to Kashmir Tourism Complex and formally commenced academic activities in March 2020 with an intake of 50 students.
Over the years, the institution has witnessed steady growth and presently caters to nearly 320 students, with female students constituting a significant proportion of the enrolment, reflecting the institution’s commitment towards inclusive and progressive education.
The college is located at Levdora, Qazigund, along NH–44, and is spread over approximately 35 kanals of land. To further strengthen academic infrastructure and student facilities, a modern multi-storey college building is presently under construction.
