Welcome to Govt. Degree College, Batote
Model Government Degree College, Batote was set up at tehsil head quarter Batote of district Ramban, situated in the foot hills of world famous hill station Patinitop in Jammu division of Jammu & Kashmir UT at a latitude of 33.123708o N and longitude of 75.319749o E . The college was established among other 42 colleges, vide Government Order No. 48-HE of 2019, dated: 05/02/2029, read with Administrative Council Decision No. 18/02.2019, dated: 14/01/2029, to cater quality higher education to the students of this area with the motive and commitment of the government in bringing higher education at the thresh hold of the people, so that the youth of this area do not get deprived of the higher education, owing to the tough terrain, geography and topography of the area. Before the establishment of this college, the nearest colleges to Batote were GDC, Ramban in the north. GDC, Doda in the east and GDC, Udhampur in the south west, not less than around at an average of 60 kms from Batote. This unavailability of a higher education institution would force the students after qualifying their 12th class either to discontinue their studies or to move to Jammu, which would over burden them with financial problems. Particularly girl students would face the problems in going to other colleges, as the approach roads would remain closed during the inclement weather.
The college was initially set up in make shift building of Government Middle school, Batote in the month of march 2019, identified by Principal GDC, Ramban with the help of district administration Ramban and civil society members of Batote. Principal GDC, Ramban, who was later assigned the charge of Nodal Officer/Principal for GDC, Batote, vide Government Order No. 299-HE of 2019, dated: 03/06/2029, looked after the whole affairs of the college in terms of identification of land, make shift arrangement, starting of admissions, initial affiliation process with the University of Jammu and vice versa.
The Administrative Department vide Government Order No. 293-HE of 2029, dated: 28/05/2019, allocated the subjects for the newly established colleges and the college adopted 11 subjects viz, General English/Communicative English, Environmental Science, Urdu, Hindi, Dogri, Computer application, History, Economics, Sociology, Political Science and Education. With the allocation of the subjects 1st batch of students comprising of 37 students were admitted to 1st semester under CBCS, semesterized scheme in the college during the academic session 2019-2020, with temporary affiliation granted by College Development Council, University of Jammu, vide Order No. CDC/2019/3078-92, dated: 6/6/2019 and started the teaching process with four small class rooms. The temporary affiliation is granted by CDC, University of Jammu on year basis. The college is progressing leaps and bounds in academia and has so far produced 3 batches of graduates, who are pursuing higher studies and most have been placed in public and private sectors.
The college was formally inaugurated in the existing makeshift campus by the then Secretary to the Government, Department of Higher Education, Sh. Talat Parvez Ruhella (IAS) on August 24, 2019.
The Administrative Department vide Government Order No. 52-JK (HE) of 2020, dated: 17/01/2020, ordered the creation of 572 gazetted and non gazetted posts and the college vide Government Order No. 179 JK (HE) of 2020, dated: 14/04/2020 was allocated the post of Principal, Six Assistant Professors viz, Dogri, English, Environmental Science, Political Science, Sociology, Urdu and 1 post of Physical Training Instructor (PTI) in the gazette category, while as 1 post in each was allocated for Junior Assistant, Library Assistant, Accountant Assistant, Chowkidar and Orderly in non gazetted category. Meanwhile 1 post of education was allocated to the college by way of rationalization of posts vide Government Order No. 362-JK (HE) of 2020, dated: 01/10/2020, however was taken aback by way of reallocation of posts vide Government Order No. 435 JK (HE) of 2020, dated: 14/12/2020.
With the creation of the post of Principal, Prof. Rajesh Kumar Gupta was posted as the 1st and founder principal of the college who took over the charge on April 23, 2020 and served the college till September 01, 2022. Consequent upon the transfer of Prof. Rejesh Kumar Gupta, Prof. (Dr) Arti Pandoh Gupta in compliance to Government Order No. 200—JK (HE) of 2022, dated: 31/08/2022, took over the reins of the college as the 2nd principal on September 12, 2022. Prof. (Dr) Pandoh served the college for a short span of 3 months and 10 days up to December 21, 2022. Upon the transfer of Prof. (Dr) Arti Pandoh Gupta, Prof. Nirlape Kour took over the charge as 3rd principal of the college on December 22, 2022 and is serving with vigor and enthusiasm as on date.
The principals with the help of the subordinate staff have tirelessly worked hard in the development of the college whether academics or infrastructure. These efforts resulted in the development of a computer lab with 12 internet enabled up to date computers, a washroom block with separate facilities for boys, girls and staff, constructed in the year 2023.
A patch of 35 kanals of land has already been identified by the department with the help of district Administration Ramban adjacent to Sub District Hospital Batote and the construction of the college building with boys and girls hostels is in pipeline and is expected to take place soon.
The college is affiliated to University of Jammu and follows the academic calendar issued by the University of Jammu, however, falls in the winter zone of Jammu division owing to its harsh winters that exactly resembles the Kashmir division and the summer and winter vacations are observed in tune with the Kashmir division colleges.
