About the College

INTRODUCTION 

Government Degree College, Baramulla, is a distinguished autonomous higher educational institution in Kashmir with a rich 116-year history of serving people of North Kashmir.

An English medium school, founded by the Catholic Missionaries at Baramulla in 1905, was upgraded to High School in 1913 and then gradually upgraded to the status of Intermediate College in 1938 and eventually to Degree College in 1943., then affiliated to Punjab University Lahore. It was closed on 27th Oct. 1947, and re-opened on 28th June, 1954, as Intermediate College, affiliated to the then University of Jammu and Kashmir and further upgraded to Degree college in 1956. The college was subsequently taken over by the State government on the 1st of April, 1963.

Presently, the college offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields such as science, arts, languages, humanities, social sciences, commerce, media and computer science, catering to the educational requirements of over 4,000 students. 

Recognized for its quality education, the college earned Grade 'A' accreditation from NAAC in 2015, and "College for Potential with Excellence (CPE)" status from UGC in 2016. The College was again awarded Grade “A” in the year 2021 by NAAC and subsequently given an autonomous status in the year 2022

The College boasts about its modern facilities, including well-equipped science and computer laboratories, digital classrooms, and an RFID-enabled library. Over the decades, the college has developed a student friendly ecosystem focusing on holistic student development, actively engaging in co-curricular and extracurricular activities, such as debates, seminars, workshops and different types of sports events, The NSS and NCC units organize community development activities, while interest clubs contribute to overall student growth. The highly qualified teaching faculty is involved in significant research projects, providing valuable opportunities for students. The college offers career counselling, and distance education programs through IGNOU and MANUU, and employs advanced technology systems to impart education to off campus learners as well.

 In addition to its academic endeavours, the college plays a crucial role in skill development, serving as a registered training provider with NSDC (ID TP152073) and offering skill training under PMKVY 4.0. The institution's commitment extends to providing hostel facilities for both male and female outstation students based on merit, aiming to provide a holistic educational experience encompassing intellectual, physical, emotional, ethical, and moral development.
