Government Degree College Shopian (GDC-S) was established in March, 1988 under the stewardship of Prof. M.K. Koul. The college started functioning at its present place since 2006. In its arduous journey spanning more than four decades the college has left indelible imprint on the society. The institute currently offers a basket of thirty courses across five streams with a substantial enrollment of students averaging 5000 a year. The institution focuses on engaging and empowering learners by constantly adopting emerging pedagogical templates. We have conceived an ecosystem that engages students, faculty and the general public through seminars, symposiums, performances, conferences to name a few. The dedication of various stakeholders came to fruition in 2017 when college was accredited for the first time by NAAC Peer Team with Grade ‘B’. Close on the heels the faculties of business administration and computer science were added to the course basket. These milestones are the underpinnings of handwork and dedication of various heads of the institutions leading a devoted team of intellectuals. In the past few years the college has upgraded its infrastructure exponentially exhibiting candidacy for grade up-gradation. The college is presently preparing for tier two assessment and accreditation and our leadership has the conviction that the college will be appreciated by the peer team.Â
The college is spread over 67 kanals of land and comprises of multi storey Science and Arts blocks, Administrative block, twelve pre-fabricated huts, Canteen, Indoor Badminton Court, etc. Significantly the newly constructed Science block houses 08 science departments with well-equipped laboratories, library, gymnasium and a computer lab.
The college has 28 lecture rooms, thirty smart class rooms, two spacious seminar/conference hall, spectacular auditorium, 10 science labs, 01 browsing center having 50 computers with internet connectivity. A well-developed library which harbors more than 30,000 books is the hallmark of college. Besides the college is connected with a regional beam of EDUSAT. The college has a unique distinction of having IIT Mumbai approved virtual lab. Presently the college provides admission in 65 combinations comprising of 33 subjects. Besides this, the college is facilitating off campus education through distance mode in collaboration with IGNOU, MANUU and DODE-Kashmir University.
