The college at a glance:
With the aim of providing higher education at doorsteps, the Jammu and Kashmir government sanctioned 50 new colleges across the erstwhile state in 2019,vide Govt. Order No. 48-HE of 2019,dated:05-02- 2019.Government Degree College Awantipora owes its existence to the union government's flagship programme of universalization of higher education. Following a momentous ceremony, The foundation stone was laid by the then advisor to the honorable governor, Shri K. Skandan on 4th March,2019 at Kanjinag, Awantipora.
Awantipora is a historic town named after Avantivarman, the first king of the Utpala dynasty, who founded the town during his rule from 855 to 883AD. Avantivarman built a Hindu temple in Awantipora dedicated to Vishnu called "Avantisvamin" before he became a king, and during his reign he built a second Hindu temple in Awantipora called "Avantisvara" dedicated to Shiva.The ruins of both temples are presently being looked after by Archeological Survey of India (ASI).
The establishment of a college in the historic town will surely go a long way in bringing higher education at the doorsteps of the student community of Awantipora and the adjoining villages. The establishment of an Islamic University of Science and Technology, All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) and now a Government Degree College has all the prospects of metamorphosing the town into a Knowledge Hub in true sense of the term.
Land for the establishment of the college, measuring about 62 kanals and 17 marlas, was identified and acquired by the government at Kanjinag Awantipora which is about 1km away from the main town. The College is presently operating from six prefabricated structures. Five of these structures are functioning as classrooms and one as establishment section. The chain-link fencing around the campus has already been completed. Separate washroom blocks for boys and girls have also been built within the campus. The work for the main building will soon be started by the R&B department.
The college has a well-equipped browsing centre with 25 PCs to cater to the needs of the students and the staff. The furniture for classrooms and the office has been purchased and put in place. Although the college has affiliation only for the B.A Course but groundwork has already been done for the affiliation of B.Sc Courses as well. Science equipment and chemicals for science laboratories have sufficiently been procured. In a landmark development, the college has recently been included by the UGC under section 2(f) of UGC act 1956 which would surely usher in a new dawn of growth and development of the college in future. Concerted efforts are being made to provide a conducive and congenial learning environment for the delivery of quality education and enabling the learners to imbibe knowledge, skills and values. The college has started undergraduate programme in Humanities with five subject combinations comprising General English, Education, History, Political Science, and Sociology. The affiliation for these subjects has been granted by the University of Kashmir. The admission process of the aspiring students for the first time was set in motion in 2020 when the college was operating from a makeshift campus at Government Elementary School, Padgampora, Pulwama. For the academic session 2021, the college started admission process from the main campus and an overwhelming number of students enrolled themselves for B.A 1st and 2nd semesters. As of the academic session 2022, Under the NEP 2020, which has been implemented in J&K in 2022 becoming the first of its kind to do the same, the college managed to admit some 180 students to B.A programme. Given the pace of the developmental work on a beautiful campus nestled between naturally carved hillocks, the college is bound to have one of the best campuses in the valley.
