Maulana Azad Memorial College Jammu basks in a glorious historical past. Maharaja Sir Partap Singh opened ‘Prince of Wales’ College in December, 1905 to commemorate the visit of Prince of Wales (the future King George V). The College was renamed as ‘Govt. Gandhi Memorial College’ on 20th May, 1948 and further bifurcated into Govt. Gandhi Memorial Arts College and Govt. Memorial Science College on 20th September, 1954 to meet the growing demands of students. Govt. Gandhi Memorial Arts College was shifted to its present location on 23rd September, 1960 and renamed as Maulana Azad Memorial College, Jammu after Jb. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Minister for Education in the Indian Government.
The building of the College has an imposing ‘facade’. There are separate blocks for Arts and Languages, Science Block and New Block, Library, Indoor sports complex, Boys and Girls Hostels and Canteen and Administrative block. Besides, one Auditorium and Swimming pool shall be ready for use of students from the next Academic session i.e. 2024.
MAM College as a constituent college of Cluster University of Jammu, aims at holistic learning research, inevitable yearning to break away from the path of mediocrity, thus helping the young learners to hone their creative skills and become self sufficient. The college has 68 regular faculty members in various disciplines and 46 members on the non-teaching staff. The college has a web-enabled Central Library with over 5700 titles in various disciplines. The Library is linked to the UGC sponsored INFLIBNET, enabling on-line access to varied national and international research journals. The faculty have published books and research papers in national and international journals. The college regularly conducts endowment lectures, inter-disciplinary seminars and invited talks by experts, on Career counselling, Psychological Counselling and varied Academic interactions on pertinent topics like Nature Conservation, Save Water, Fit India etc including celebrating important days and events. The college has become a role model in co9nducting extension activities.
The college has recently initiated two industrial skill courses in CCNA and Soft Skills & Personality Development in collaboration with NIELIT and Central University of Jammu.
To achieve the best possible results, the institute has taken the following measures:
Research Hub and spoke: The college is a research hub for social sciences and spoke for mass communication and multimedia and music and fine arts and languages.
ICT-enabled classrooms- To create a better teaching-learning environment, the institution has adopted the practice of ICT-enabled teaching.
Emphasis on E-content: To facilitate the creation and dissemination of e-content, the college also has an E-content room
Browsing Centre: The institute has a browsing Centre for Both the students and faculty to help them in their respective areas.
Library and laboratories: The college has automated library well equipped with relevant books for all the subjects. All the departments with experimental work have well equipped laboratories.
Well-upgraded website: The institute has a website which provides links for all the activities going on in the college in addition to any new announcements related to their courses as well as exams.
Industrial Skill training courses: Apart from the regular courses, the institute also offers training courses to students to form the next generation of the talent pool of Industry ready employees, innovators and entrepreneurs. The institute has signed an MOU with Central HED, Jammu to offer a course on soft skills and personality development to the students.
Extension Activities: The institute organizes and participates in various extension activities with dual objective of not only sensitizing students about various social issues but also strengthening community participation. NCC and NSS units take part in various initiatives like, Swachh Bharat, blood donation camps, AIDS prevention, Suicide prevention, Drug Abuse road safety, plastic eradication, etc. Programs like ‘Save our Lakes’, tree plantation drive, cleaning of Tawi river have been taken up as part of environmental consciousness and encouraging the community to initiate steps in this regard.
