Government Degree College, Paloura is a co-educational institution which was established in the year 2008 vide Govt. Order No. 269-HE of 2007 dated 20-12-2007 under the Prime Minister Reconstruction Plan (PMRP) to take education to the doorsteps of the people residing in the peripheral and far-flung areas of the Union territory. At present college is functioning from its own campus at Assarwan, Mishriwala in Tehsil Bhalwal under the jurisdiction District Jammu. It is the only college in entire Bhalwal tehsil that caters to needs of 2500-3500 students passing out annually from 8 feeding higher secondary schools located in this part of union territory.

Initially the college started functioning from the premises of Government Engineering College at Old Campus, canal road, Jammu with  Arts stream (Education, Political Science, English and Hindi/Urdu) only with a mere enrollment of 51 students (Male-17 and Female-34) during the first academic session i.e. 2008-09. In the year 2017 college got sanction for introduction of science stream (Medical/ Non-medical) from Department of Higher Education, Jammu and Kashmir vide order no 246-HE of 2017 dated 25-04-2017. Subsequently admission to science stream, both medical and non-medical, was made from the academic session 2018-19 and onwards. 

The college has a lush green and well maintained campus spread in 7 acres (110 canals). Government Degree College, Paloura (Mishriwala) is affiliated to University of Jammu and follows the curriculum designed by the University of Jammu The student enrolment has now increased to 1580 during the current session 2022-23 and 20 subjects under 36 subject combinations in two streams viz., Arts and Science, are being taught in the college. Moreover, the enrollment of the students in this college is increasing regularly. The college had 850 students on roll during the session 2023-24

Government Degree college, Paloura is only institution of higher education in this area. This institution has:

  • Well established vision, mission and efficient governance.
  • Assured financial support from Government of UT and from certain centrally sponsored schemes like RUSA.
  • The whole campus is Wi-Fi connected along with cctv surveillance to ensure the safety and security of the students and to ensure effective administration.
  • College has functional IQAC for quality improvement of the Institution.
  • Pollution-free and eco-friendly green and clean campus.
  • Complete adoption of CBCS since 2016-17 and NEP (2020) since 2022-23.
  • Quality infra-structure with latest gadgets like smart and Interactive Panels augmented with Power backup system (3 Gensets and 2 online UPS) for effective teaching learning process.
  • College has an established Library with good collection of standard books, reference books and Journals and e-resource.
  • The institution has well educated permanent faculty selected by Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission and appointed by government of Union territory.
  • Regular updation of faculty members through various Faculty Development Programs (Orientation, Refresher courses, Seminars, Workshops and Conferences) to meet the changing trends in education and related areas.
  • Students are encouraged to participate in curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
  • The student-teacher ratio is 44:1
  • Admission process is conducted in a transparent manner based on merit of the last qualified examination.
  • The examination process (Internal and External) is conducted strictly as per the statutes.
  • The feedback from Students/Parents/Alumni/faculty is considered for quality improvement in Curriculum and Infrastructure.
  • Regular community outreach programmes through NCC, NSS, Yuva Tourism Club,Eco-club, Reb Ribbon Club etc to empower the marginalized and downtrodden section of the society.
  • Promoting Programmes to cater human values, social sensitiveness, self-reliance, National Integration etc.
  • Value based and skill-oriented education is the prime aim of the Degree programmes emphasized through well-defined syllabi, regular classes and assessments.
  • Hostel facility for girl students under RUSA. Final hand over- take over is awaited.
  • Additional 4 Laboratories and 8 Classrooms under Languishing Project in final phase of completion.

Institutional Weakness

The college has insufficient number of classrooms, laboratories, examination halls and sports infrastructure.

Shortage of Permanent teaching staff and the college has to engage Academic arrangement faculty on the recommendations of Higher education department, for every academic session

Lack of proper transport facility to the college. College has only one bus to cater to a huge number of students.

Limited focus on research activity due to less number of faculty with Ph.D and there is lack of research facilities/Infrastructure.

Less Involvement of Alumni at institute level.

Lack of  non-teaching staff in laboratories, Establishment Section and Office.
